Moisture, Mold and Heat-Treated Pallets: Storage Tips

Mold and heat treatment are unrelated

A persistent misconception is that heat-treated pallets are mold-proof. Heat treatment under ISPM-15 raises the wood core to at least 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes to kill insects and larvae, which is a pest measure, not a fungal one. It does not sterilize the wood against future mold, and it does nothing to prevent mold if the treated pallet later gets wet. Buyers who assume the HT stamp guarantees a clean pallet are conflating two different problems.

Mold is a living fungus that colonizes wood when moisture and food are both present, and wood is always the food. The only variable a storage operation controls is moisture. This is why a properly heat-treated pallet can still grow mold on a rainy dock, and why a chemically untreated, kiln-dried pallet kept dry can stay pristine. Understanding that moisture, not treatment, governs mold reframes the entire prevention strategy around keeping wood dry.

The moisture content threshold

Wood mold generally needs a moisture content above roughly 19 to 20 percent to become active, so the goal of dry storage is to keep pallets below that threshold. Freshly cut or rain-soaked wood sits well above it and is prime mold territory, while properly dried lumber sits comfortably below and resists colonization. Managing moisture content is therefore the central lever, and it starts at the source with how the wood was dried.

Kiln drying is the strongest defense because it drives moisture down and, as a bonus of heat treatment run at higher intensity, can leave the wood dry as well as pest-free. Air-dried or green wood is far more vulnerable. When sourcing pallets for humidity-sensitive shipments, asking about moisture content is as legitimate as asking about grade, because a pallet that arrives damp is a mold problem waiting to unfold in the receiving warehouse.

Store off the ground and under cover

Two storage rules prevent most mold: keep pallets off the ground and keep them out of the weather. Pallets stacked directly on soil or bare concrete wick up ground moisture from below, and pallets left in the rain absorb it from above, both pushing moisture content past the mold threshold. Storing on racks or dunnage, under a roof or cover, breaks both moisture pathways and keeps the wood in the safe zone.

Airflow matters as much as cover. Tightly wrapped or densely stacked pallets trap humidity between boards, creating a micro-climate where mold thrives even under a roof. Leaving space for air to circulate around and through the stacks lets ambient drying continue and prevents pockets of trapped moisture. A covered, elevated, well-ventilated storage area is the single most effective mold-prevention investment a facility can make.

Rotate stock and watch dwell time

Mold needs time as well as moisture, so how long a pallet sits is a controllable risk factor. A slightly damp pallet shipped quickly may never develop visible mold, while the same pallet sitting for weeks in a humid corner will. First-in, first-out rotation keeps dwell times short and prevents pallets from aging into problems at the back of the yard where nobody is watching them.

Seasonal awareness sharpens this. Warm, humid months accelerate mold growth dramatically, so summer storage demands tighter rotation and closer attention than dry winter conditions. A facility that lets inventory stagnate through a humid stretch is inviting mold across its whole stock. Treating dwell time as a variable to manage, rather than an afterthought, closes off the time dimension that mold needs to take hold.

What mold means and does not mean

It helps to know what surface mold actually signifies. Cosmetic surface mold is common on wood and, while unsightly and unacceptable to many customers, is often a surface condition rather than structural decay. Decay fungi that actually rot and weaken the wood are a more serious matter and indicate prolonged saturation. Distinguishing surface mold from active rot tells you whether a pallet needs cleaning and drying or genuine removal from service.

That said, mold is never something to ship to a customer, particularly for food, pharmaceutical, or consumer goods, where a moldy pallet can contaminate product and trigger rejection. Even cosmetic mold signals a moisture-control failure that will worsen if ignored. Treating any mold as an alarm that storage conditions have slipped, rather than a minor blemish, keeps small problems from becoming rejected shipments and damaged relationships.

Recovering pallets that got wet

When pallets do get soaked, prompt action can save them. Spreading them out to dry with good airflow, ideally in sun or a heated space, can bring moisture content back below the threshold before mold establishes. The window matters: acting within a day or two of wetting is far more effective than discovering the problem after mold has already colonized the boards.

For pallets that have already molded, options depend on severity. Light surface mold on structurally sound pallets can sometimes be cleaned and dried for non-sensitive uses, while heavily molded or decayed units are best diverted to grinding rather than risked on a shipment. A recovery yard with drying space and grinding capacity can triage wet inbound loads efficiently, salvaging what is sound and routing the rest to productive scrap outlets rather than letting a wet batch become a total loss.
