Why 48×40 won
The Grocery Manufacturers Association standardized the 48×40 footprint decades ago because it fits a 48-inch-wide trailer opening two pallets wide with minimal wasted space, and it suits the case dimensions of most grocery and consumer-goods products. Network effects did the rest: once retailers and 3PLs built racking and automation around it, the 48×40 became self-reinforcing.
Today it accounts for roughly a third of all new pallets produced in North America and an even larger share of the used market — which makes it the easiest size to source, repair and resell.
Specs at a glance
A standard 48×40 GMA stringer pallet weighs roughly 33–48 lbs depending on species and moisture, offers four-way entry when the stringers are notched, and carries a static load well above its dynamic rating. Exact capacity depends on construction and grade, so always confirm against your heaviest load.
Because it's so common, the 48×40 is also where recycling economics are strongest — repair, reboard and resale volumes are high enough to keep both price and availability attractive.
